I find the public holidays that end up being in the middle of the week very disruptive, and unproductive. The stop-start situation does to the work force what the stop-go signs do to the long-distance motorist – frustrates them. You end up loosing work hours due to the fact that everyone switches off and winds down before the holiday and they take a while to warm up and get back into action after the holiday.
Would it not be a good idea to move the public holidays to the Friday –no matter what day it falls on? Some companies already close early or work half day on a Friday. That way everyone could plan ahead and enjoy a long week-end at various intervals throughout the year. I think this would enable everyone to pick a long week-end to go away and thereby lessen the traffic congestion that we now experience. The traffic on our roads would be spread out over a few long week-ends instead of only at Easter etc. Maybe this would lead to less stress and save a few lives in the process.
